The process of moving can be difficult, stressful, and lengthy. Unfortunately, this work doesn’t stop once you’re in your new home. There is a lot to take care of post-move. Before you can fully relax and enjoy your new home, there are many things you’ll want to take care of.
If you’re wondering what to do after moving, here is a checklist that will help you keep track of all your important tasks.
Hopefully you remembered to close or move your utility accounts to your new home. Otherwise, you might not have heat, air conditioning, electricity, cable, or internet in your new home. Even if you did arrange for everything to be ready for you on the first day you moved in, you’ll need to check and make sure that everything is working.
If anything isn’t up and running the way it should be, contact the provider as soon as you can to make sure your home is safe and comfortable.
This is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the waste pickup schedule for your home. You want to make sure you know when garbage and recycling are collected as well as what you’ll need to do to make sure the process happens smoothly. For instance, some municipalities have certain rules and regulations regarding the types of bins, containers, or bags that should be used. Make sure you know these details.
One of the most important parts of any moving checklist is securing your home once you’ve moved in. First of all, arrange to have a locksmith come and change the locks. You have no idea if the previous residents still have keys to your home nor do you know how many keys they’ve given out. By changing the locks, you improve security and give yourself peace of mind. Be sure to get extra keys for yourself once the locks are changed.
It's a good idea to check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re all working correctly.
If there is a garage door opener installed in your home, reprogram it. The same is true for any remote access devices.
If there is a security system installed in the home, contact the security provider to make sure that it has been deactivated. You can then reactivate it for yourself, either with the same company or with another. This will ensure that you can program your own codes to protect your home.
If you have done so already, you’ll need to make sure that all your important documents are updated. This includes your bills, your driver’s license, your insurance documents, and much more. You may want to have your mail forwarded from your old address to your new one to make sure you don’t miss out on anything important.
When you move to a new neighbourhood, you’ll want to know where to find the hospital, fire department, police station, and other important locations.
This is especially true if you’ve done a long-distance move and you now live in a completely new part of the country – or potentially a completely new country!
You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the area and make sure you know where all the important places are located.
If you have children who will be going to school in the area, find out where the school is located as well as where you can find the parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities you may use. It’s also good to find the nearest hardware or home improvement store in case you have any work to do on your property.
